Innovative, fast COVID-19 PCR test solutions at Brussels Airport
October 21, 2021
MiDiagnostics is introducing an ultrafast PCR test. The test uses a nasal swab and shows similar performance to the classic PCR test but the time from sample to result has been reduced to less than fifteen minutes, a very short time compared to the current rapid PCR tests, which still have a turnaround time of at least three hours. This ultrafast result is possible because the analysis process has been miniaturised with a silicon chip developed by imec.
In addition miDiagnostics is also exploring the compatibility of its ultrafast PCR test with imec’s breath sampling technology, collecting aerosols and droplets from exhaled breath to screen for COVID-19. This novel technology was developed by imec and is now licensed by miDiagnostics for commercialisation. The breath sampling technology is capable of capturing the COVID-19 virus in exhaled air and detecting the viral RNA quickly and reliably.
In collaboration with Brussels Airport both tests will now be evaluated during a pilot in the Test Centre at Brussels Airport. Passengers using the Test Centre will have the opportunity to take part in this study by volunteering for an ultrafast PCR test in addition to their standard PCR test.
